Former DC movie star Gal Gadot has opened up about the confusion surrounding Wonder Woman 3, saying that, even though it “wasn’t handled elegantly,” it’s “all good” between her, James Gunn, and Peter Safran.
The story of Wonder Woman 3 is a bit of a mess. Gadot’s return was seemingly greenlit, canceled, greenlit again, and, finally, canceled in the early 2020s, with its supposed early days unfortunately weighed down by leadership changes behind the scenes as Gunn and Safran stepped in to take over the DC movie business.
One of the stranger updates during the kerfuffle saw the actress confirm the two superhero film execs had told her she would come back as Diana Prince for Wonder Woman 3 before it was reported that Gunn and Safran didn’t have any plans for a third movie from director Patty Jenkins after all. It was a back-and-forth painful enough to watch from the outside, but it was probably even more grueling on the inside.
Gadot recalled the confusion during an interview with Happy, Sad, Confused. She again confirmed that Gunn and Safran assured her Wonder Woman 3 was happening, going as far as to say that there was never a clear moment when the project was formally canned.
“No, they told me the opposite,” she answered when asked about the circumstances surrounding the cancellation. “They were like, ‘We’re going to develop it with you, [Wonder Woman 3], but I saw the way everybody else was handled, right?”
The “everybody else” she referred to involves the former DC movie universe, often called the DC Extended Universe. It comprised films led by Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Henry Cavill as Superman. Cavill, in particular, had it rough when Gunn and Safran laid the groundwork for the DCU, as he also officially announced he would reprise his role as Clark Kent in October 2022 just to U-turn two months later.
“The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least,” Gadot added. “Same with Patty – was not handled elegantly. I feel like, you know, we’re all adults and it’s all good, and it’s not even about them.”
She continued, saying that Gunn, Safran, and the rest of DC Studios are going “to do what they believe in, and it’s all good.” She said she’s grateful she had the opportunity to be Wonder Woman at all and sends her best to whoever plays the part of the Amazonian superhero next. That said, don’t expect her to ever play the part again, even if Gunn and Safran come knocking at her door.
“For me to go and do, for example, another Wonder Woman, I’m not sure I would at this point in my life with four children and different schools, and all of that. To check out all of them for such a long period of time… It doesn’t work with my life anymore at this point.”
For now, Wonder Woman 3 isn’t happening, and it’s unclear when the character will make her entrance into the DCU. Next up are movies like Clayface and Man of Tomorrow. Lanterns, one of the comic book movie universe’s TV shows, is in the midst of its first season, with The People v. Gorilla Grodd confirmed to be in development.
