Nintendo adds VRR support to docked Nintendo Switch 2 in latest console update

A new update for the Nintendo Switch 2 has added VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support while the console is docked.

Listed in the Switch 2 version 23.0.0 update released today, Nintendo explains that as long as both your TV and the software you’re playing supports it, VRR should now work. All you need to do to enable it is update your Switch 2 dock firmware and turn it on in the Display section of the settings.

If you’re not familiar with what VRR actually does, in basic terms it matches the refresh rate of the game you’re playing with your TV or monitor. When these are out of sync, noticeable glitches like screen tearing or stuttering can occur as the console attempts to match their refresh rates. In theory, then, you should see less screen-tearing and stuttering with VRR enabled.

The update also brings some other nice additions to the Switch 2. “Complete Data Transfer” is now supported between two Switch 2 consoles, meaning if you want to upgrade to a newer Switch 2 model or preserve your save files after smashing up your current Switch 2 because you were struggling on a boss in Elden Ring, you can now easily move your files over to a new one.

Switch 2 owners can also now play music in the background of the Mii editing screen, and it can be swapped or stopped with the press of a single button in the upper left corner of the screen. How lovely.
