Hollywood has given us pretty much every possible version of a Santa Claus movie over the years. We’ve had good Santa, Bad Santa, Tim Allen Santa, and even evil robot Santa. But in 2022, Violent Night managed to put a fresh spin on the character by combining Santa Claus with the gritty action-hero story of Die Hard and the expertly choreographed combat of the John Wick movies. Violent Night was a surprisingly delightful spin on the genre, and four years later, we’re getting a sequel that takes the series in an even more surprising direction.
Violent Night 2 has a “very strong Western-vibe” returning director Tommy Wirkola tells Polygon as part of our 2026 Fall Preview. We’ll let him explain.

Ahead of Violent Night 2‘s release on Dec. 4, 2026, Polygon caught up with Wirkola to ask him a few questions about the sequel for our 2026 Fall Preview. We also got our hands on an exclusive image from the film, which you can check out below.
Santa goes full Katniss
In the exclusive image shared with Polygon, Santa rides up an escalator while preparing to shoot a bow and arrow. It’s a pivot from Skullcrusher, the ancient hammer he used against the criminals in Violent Night. The premise of the film is pretty clever; Wirkola tells Polygon it took a while to come up with that hook before co-screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller finally delivered the winning idea.
“It actually took a bit of searching before we landed on that particular idea,” he says. “A few scenarios were discussed and even outlined, stuff that didn’t end up being strong enough, but when Pat and Josh finally presented that one idea, along with the mall setting, we knew we had our way in. We had a lot of ideas on characters, arcs and where we wanted to go emotionally, and this approach allowed us to explore all that in a fun way.”
Why Violent Night 2 is a Western
Violent Night riffed on Die Hard with the premise of a dangerous hostage situation that only one man can stop. The sequel, however, is taking things in a different direction, while also staying true to the spirit of the original.
“It’s definitely in the sub-genre of ‘mall-movies,'” Wirkola says, “and aside from this obviously being a Christmas action-movie first and foremost, it also has a very strong Western vibe, where Santa is our lone hero riding into town (the mall), helping the villagers (shop-owners) in need.”
