The endless curiosity of my five-year-old is often hard to manage. Combined with his nonstop energy, I often feel like I can’t keep up when it comes to toys and activities that fuel his eagerness to move and learn.

Dex is a language-learning camera designed primarily for kids ages 3 to 8. The concept is wonderfully simple: point the camera at something, take a picture and let Dex figure out what you’re looking at.
Rather than simply displaying a word on a screen, Dex says the word aloud in the language your child is learning and builds a short lesson around the object.

Dex currently supports 16 languages and more than 30 dialects, and parents can use the companion app to manage the experience. There are also games and activities beyond the main camera mode, which gives kids something else to do once the novelty of photographing everything in the house inevitably wears off. My older kids (9 and 12) had a blast changing the language and learning a few words, too.

My son does not sit still for long, and standard learning apps rarely match his pace. But give him a tool that pairs with his natural curiosity, and he will happily roam.
In our backyard, Dex became his companion. The camera is surprisingly sturdy, yet easily fit into his hand. There’s no awkward pause while an adult waits for the “right” answer and no sense that he’s being tested. He can hear the pronunciation, listen to the context and repeat it if and when he wants to.
Learning became a byproduct of exploring rather than the activity we’d asked him to sit down and complete.
Dex became our scavenger hunt everywhere
At the beach, Dex gave my son a mission. Instead of simply carrying another toy around, he started examining the environment for things worth photographing: sand, shells and whatever else washed up around us.
Even grocery shopping became more interesting. Anyone who has taken an active five-year-old through a supermarket knows how quickly a routine errand can unravel. Normally, the easiest solution is also the one many parents are trying to avoid: hand over a phone.
Dex gave us another option as he took images of produce, cereal boxes and dairy cartons. Instead of passively watching something while I shopped, he was looking around the store for his next subject.
I wouldn’t pretend this magically transforms every Target run into an educational wonderland. He’s still five. But it gave him something purposeful to do that didn’t involve disappearing into YouTube. And that’s a win I’ll take.
There are a few catches
One of Dex’s smartest ideas is that object recognition is only the beginning of the interaction. It also saves discoveries as badge-like stickers that fill with color as kids practice saying the words. My son could return to things he’d already found rather than having every interaction disappear as soon as he took another picture.
I expected Dex to appeal to my youngest. I didn’t expect my older kids to keep asking to play with it, too. Once they realized they could switch languages, Spanish turned ordinary household objects into a family guessing game. Suddenly everyone wanted to point Dex at something and hear what it was called in a new language.
That gave me another perspective on the recommended age range. The design is clearly aimed at younger children, but the underlying trick — point a camera at practically anything and hear about it in another language — doesn’t suddenly become boring when a child turns nine.
It’s not completely screen-free — and that’s worth saying. Calling Dex “screen-free” would be misleading. There’s a screen right on the device. But the difference here is that the screen is asking the child to be present and active.
A tablet typically pulls attention inward: sit here, watch this, tap this. Dex repeatedly pushes attention outward: find something, photograph it, listen, say it and go find something else.
For parents worried about screen time, I think that’s a more useful distinction than simply counting whether a device technically contains a display. My son can spend 30 minutes using Dex and spend much of that time looking at grass, bugs, food and the world around him rather than the display itself.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that the AI isn’t always perfect. You may notice mistakes occasionally, but we did not run into anything other than an occasional blurry picture when my son moved too fast.
There’s also a companion app involved, and some features and activities depend on Dex’s broader software ecosystem rather than the camera operating as a completely standalone toy. Depending on the plan you choose, there can also be an ongoing subscription cost. It is still fully functional without the subscription cost, so don’t let that be a deal breaker.
And like any connected kids’ gadget, it’s another device that has to be charged, configured and occasionally troubleshot. But the battery life is surprisingly solid. Even after a backyard adventure and grocery store run, it sill had plenty of juice for afternoon play.

When he finds something strange in the grass, he wants to know what it’s called. The technology has become a bridge between his curiosity and the language surrounding it.
