Then there’s the tiniest elephant in the room: Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process node with dual 16-core Neural Engines (32 cores total), 50% more memory bandwidth, and a three-times-larger vapor chamber. It brings real performance and efficiency gains you can experience while running heavy tasks on the device, a more proactive Siri AI experience, and more responsive Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Photo editing features.
Driving all those features, along with the most intuitive ecosystem perks, is iOS 27. To summarize, the iPhone 18 Pro Max prioritizes tangible mechanical upgrades and endurance, even if that means adding noticeable (and slightly questionable) bulk.

Pixel 11 Pro XL: Google puts software front and center, even if the silicon takes a back seat
The Pixel 11 Pro XL, despite sharing the same segment and price point as the other two flagships, is the only handset where the silicon feels secondary to the software that runs on it.
Gemini feels less like an AI feature bolted onto Android and more like something woven into the operating system, quietly working in the background as you go about your day.
That philosophy extends beyond Gemini. Google has essentially turned the Pixel into a showcase for what it thinks Android should feel like. Features like Magic Capture, Gboard Rambler, Instant Night Sight, and Create Suite make this feel like the smartest yet most understated version of Android; everything feels natural rather than forced.
After shooting more than 1,000 photos with the Pixel 11 Pro XL, the new 48MP 5x telephoto is the best, hands down. Its larger 1/1.95-inch sensor gives me cleaner telephoto shots, though the green tint issue I mentioned in my review persists. Even at max zoom, the pictures stay usable up to 20x or 30x (something that also applies to the iPhone 18 Pro Max or the Galaxy S26 Ultra).

Then there are Pixel Drops, which constantly add new layers to the experience and keep it feeling fresh. Add seven years of OS and security updates, and the Pixel 11 Pro XL starts to make a different kind of pitch: you are buying an Android smartphone designed to keep getting smarter and more useful over time.
I also appreciate the 6.8-inch display more when I’m outside. At 3,600 nits peak, it’s the brightest of the three, making the screen easier to read in harsh sunlight. Charging is less frustrating too, with the dedicated fast-charging mode pushing speeds to 45W, while 25W Qi2.2 magnetic charging adds convenience without a magnetic case, something Samsung still can’t offer in 2026.

Compared to how distinct and unique the Google AI experiences are, the Tensor G6’s peak performance feels underwhelming at best. Where the iPhone 18 Pro Max is all about mechanical refinement and the Pixel 11 Pro XL makes software the star, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the one I keep coming back to when I want to do more. It’s less about one headline upgrade and more about the sheer number of genuinely useful things Samsung lets me do.
The Privacy Display and S Pen are the clearest examples, and neither has a real counterpart on the iPhone or Pixel. The former lets me hide my bank records or passwords in public, while the latter lets me make a to-do list, jot down my thoughts on the go, or edit pictures with a level of precision that finger input simply can’t match. Right off the bat, that’s two things that the iPhone and the Pixel can’t match, period.

On the iPhone and the Pixel, in-sensor crop takes you from 1x to 4x or 1x to 5x, respectively. However, on the S26 Ultra, a second telephoto camera kicks in at 3x for optical-quality zoom between 1x and 5x. That added flexibility helped me capture portraits or close-up shots indoors or in enclosed spaces.
We’ve left the megapixel wars behind us, but the 200MP primary camera with an f/1.4 aperture does exceptionally well in poorly lit conditions.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy gives the Ultra enough power to do virtually anything you can on a smartphone. This is what feels natural, what buyers have come to expect from flagships over the years.

I also notice the difference whenever I pick the three phones up together. At roughly 7.9mm and 214g, the S26 Ultra is the thinnest and lightest of the three, and that makes it surprisingly easy to carry for a phone with this much hardware inside. While the phone shares its wired charging speed with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it still lacks native wireless charging. I’d say the battery life is about the same as the Pixel, or slightly better.
Samsung has clearly thrown everything on the wall, and most of it sticks. For me, that makes the Galaxy S26 Ultra the most versatile of the three, even if it isn’t the most refined in every area.
