Marvel’s Wolverine’s Secret Ending Officially Sets up New X-Men Game

For all of Marvel’s Wolverine’s flaws, many of which are outlined in our review, the wider implications of its story for hardcore Marvel fans is not one of them. While players unfamiliar with the canonical universe may find the narrative hooks don’t latch on until the later missions, longtime X-Men aficionados will see faces such as Bolivar Trask, Nathaniel Essex, and Omega Red during the game’s opening mission and know they’re in for an authentic ride.

After completing the game and watching both the ending and the post-credits scene, it’s safe to say Logan’s journey isn’t over. While the surface-level plot revolves around multiple storylines, including Nathaniel Essex’s slow descent into madness and how he eventually becomes Mister Sinister, there’s one character who keeps penetrating our hairy protagonist’s thoughts: Apocalypse.

Firstly, check out the final cutscene of Marvel’s Wolverine below, which occurs right before the credits roll:

This takes place after Wolverine defeated Nathaniel Essex and Master Mold, the enormous sentinel terrorising Tokyo while hunting for dormant mutants. That fight finished with Jean Grey turning into Phoenix then addressing Apocalypse by name, asking the iconic X-Men villain if he remembers her. Following that, a scene takes place with Logan and Jean together on a farm, where she tells him about when they lived together in the past.

In the ending, Callisto asks Jean if she’s going to go after Sabretooth, the friend-turned-enemy of Wolverine. She declines, saying he’ll turn up if he’s still alive. She also reveals that her and Logan have a much longer history together than implied throughout the story: “You don’t understand how many times I’ve done this with him,” she responds to Callisto asking if she’s okay.

The next notable moment is when Logan shows up and apologizes for still not being able to remember anything about the past. He says that he thinks Jean and her friends “are gonna do a lotta good here,” but Jean’s reply is another indicator of a potential sequel or DLC: “It’s not here I’m worried about. All these new mutants are going to wake up to a world that hates them. For something they had no part in. Who’s gonna help them?”

Logan then explains that he can’t stay, because he needs to figure out who he used to be, and if Apocalypse knows… he tails off, with the clear implication that he’s going to hunt Apocalypse down. After a little more dialogue, Callisto returns, and asks Jean Grey for her help.

Is the implication here that we’ll see a spin-off game where Jean Grey is the protagonist? Right before the credits roll, she tells Callisto she’ll help, and since Logan will be off hunting down Apocalypse, it seems like she’s going to need to take the lead.

However, that’s not all; check out the post-credits scene below:

So, Sabretooth is actually still alive, despite being impaled on a food vendor’s cart, and he’s hunting down Apocalypse. The post-credits scene shows him walking into some form of crypt. Apocalypse is also inside his head. Vic stumbles upon another Helix Engine, one covered in dust, and as he inspects it, a shadowy silhouette with glowing blue eyes looms over him forebodingly. “The board has been set,” Apocalypse tells him. “The pieces are in play. Death’s turn is over… Now is the time… For War.”

Part of Logan’s journey in Marvel’s Wolverine involves him discovering that in a previous life, he was Death, one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse. However, thanks to Jean Grey (and some may argue Nathaniel Essex too), he became free from that life. Now it looks like Sabretooth is also going to become one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse: War.

There is a second post-credits scene too, unlocked by completing all the game’s optional nightmare trials and achieving at least a bronze ranking on each. Rather than just a watchable scene, however, this is a short, playable mission titled “Home.” All it consists of is Logan walking through the countryside near his and Jean’s farm in Canada, while Jean tells him more about their history. There is little to infer about a potential sequel here, but it does provide context to their relationship.

Thanks to a colossal internal leak at Insomniac Games back in 2023, we’ve known for a while that the studio has planned a new X-Men game. When the leak occurred, it had a scheduled release window in Fall 2030. It’s been almost three years since the leak, which also claimed that Marvel’s Venom would be out in 2025, and since that didn’t happen, it’s safe to say the dates aren’t set in stone. But it means that if that game is still in the works, no doubt it’ll be the one that continues this Apocalypse-themed storyline.

It’s fairly clear that Insomniac and Marvel plan for this to be a multi-game saga, and even though Marvel’s Wolverine hasn’t had the best reception, the studio is a master of its craft when it comes to creating superhero worlds. Anything could happen between now and the leaked X-Men game, but this game certainly sets up all manner of possibilities for sequels, spin-offs, and DLC.
