Google is building a “black box” for Android AI, but the agents aren’t inside yet

Google has introduced AISeal, a hardware-isolated vault for the personal data that Android AI assistants will need. It’s designed to protect that information even if an attacker compromises the phone’s main operating system.

Think of the “black box” as a locked workspace inside the phone. Google is starting with secure storage for personal context, such as messages and calendar events. AI models and autonomous agents are supposed to move into that workspace later.

How does the vault protect data

AISeal uses Android’s virtualization framework to create a protected virtual machine. That’s a separate computing environment with boundaries enforced through hardware, where sensitive information can stay encrypted and isolated from the rest of Android.

An assistant running inside Google’s planned vault could consult a calendar and summarize a schedule without passing the underlying entries to the main operating system. Controls at the exit would let only the intended answer leave.

The assistant would still need access to private information to do its job. The vault would contain where that access happens and restrict what comes back out. That’s useful protection, though it doesn’t establish that every answer an agent produces will be leak-proof.

What’s actually rolling out now

Hardware-isolated personal context storage is rolling out across Android. Google hasn’t named the phones that have it enabled or provided a rollout schedule by region.

MediaTek has announced AISeal support on its Dimensity 9600 Pro chip. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets will also support the architecture, although Google doesn’t identify specific models.

A supported processor won’t tell buyers whether a phone’s assistant actually runs inside AISeal. That requires confirmation of how the phone manufacturer has implemented it, particularly while protected AI processing remains on the roadmap.

When do the agents move inside

Google plans to bring model execution and autonomous agents into the protected environment. Sensitive context would then stay out of the main operating system’s memory while the AI processes it.

It’s also working toward direct access to the phone’s AI accelerator so models inside the vault can run efficiently.

There’s no launch date for those capabilities. Before treating AISeal as a reason to buy a phone, look for confirmation that its assistant runs inside the vault and an explanation of what information can leave.
