Divisive climate change satire Digger is set to lose $250 million by the end of its run, according to TheWrap. TheWrap claims insiders at new Warner Bros. overlords Skydance are not anticipating Digger will exceed a worldwide box office total of $40 million following its alarming opening weekend results (just $8 million in US domestic takings and a further $12 million in international receipts).

Warner Bros. has not commented on the claims. Warner Bros., which is being acquired by Paramount in a controversial $110 billion deal, will now exist alongside the latter under parent company Skydance.

Directed by back-to-back Best Director Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) and starring screen legend Tom Cruise, Digger has split both critics and audiences. Attempts have been made to weaponise the mixed reaction to its favour, but it doesn’t appear to have translated to increased interest in the film at the box office. IGN’s review notes Digger has “the budget to let some very talented artists work at the top of their game” but stresses it’s “far from a must-watch.”
