Despite positive reviews, Amazon MGM canceled the Nic Cage-led Spider-Noir Prime Video series earlier this month. However, at the time, Deadline reported that Amazon and Sony — which holds the screen rights to Spider-Man characters — were still ideating and developing additional Spider-projects. On Tuesday, Deadline reported that Amazon MGM is “closing in on an order for a new series” based on the “Clone Saga” storyline that threw Spider-Man canon for a loop in the 1990s. The clone Ben Reilly first appeared as a one-off character in the 1970s before being brought back in the ’90s. In a controversial decision, it was revealed that Ben was the original person and Peter Parker a clone, but Marvel quickly reversed that change. The “Clone Saga” also featured Kaine Parker, a flawed clone who was an antagonist in the storyline. Ben and Kaine will be the “Clone Saga” TV series’ protagonists.

Deadline’s sources had conflicting details about the plot of the show. Some said it would be about Ben and Kaine coming to grips with their clone identities while tangling with other clones. Separate sources said their origins as clones could be altered, and they could be given new monikers.
No matter how the new show approaches “Clone Saga,” there may be significant deviations from the source material. Deadline noted that Spider-Noir had to change the character’s name from Peter Parker to Ben Reilly because of “rights carveouts,” so it’s possible that the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker, may not be usable for the “Clone Saga” show.
American Born Chinese creator Kelvin Yu is writing the series, while Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller are expected to be executive producers, alongside Yu, on the project. Spider-fans likely know Lord and Miller best as the producers of the animated Spider-Verse movies, the third of which, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is out next year on June 18, 2027.
