Apple has just released an emergency carrier bundle update for AT&T customers using the iPhone 18 Pro Max on the iOS 27.2 beta. The new carrier version is 72.0.3, up from 72.0.2, and it lands just a week after Apple pushed version 72.1 to iOS 27.0 users.
What problem is Apple trying to fix?
For roughly two weeks, plenty of AT&T customers with the iPhone 18 Pro Max have looked down to find their signal bars replaced by an SOS icon. When the bug hits, the phone can’t make calls, send texts, or use mobile data. Some users lose service intermittently, while others lose it completely.
The first complaints appeared on Reddit and Apple’s community forums around September 25, 2026, about seven days after the phone went on sale. AT&T didn’t address it publicly until October 1. Interestingly, the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only model in the new lineup that relies on a Qualcomm modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s in-house C2 chip.
Will this update bring your bars back?
That’s the big question. According to Apple, iOS 27.0.1 and an accompanying carrier settings update were designed to keep the bug from reaching more phones. The catch is that devices already hit by the issue would still have to be swapped for new hardware.
That hasn’t gone smoothly either. Early feedback showed iOS 27.0.1 did little for phones that were already affected, and a few owners said their warranty replacement claims were rejected. Whether the new 72.0.3 bundle can change that remains to be seen.
If you’re on the iOS 27.2 beta, go to Settings → General → About, and your iPhone should prompt you to install the new carrier update. If your bars still don’t return, a trip to the Apple Store might be your best bet.
