The end of Flat AI frustrations

Building on their previous innovations, Canva and Google have announced the Canva Connected App for Gemini. This new feature lets users generate and edit on-brand designs or search for and summarize their Canva content directly within Gemini chat.

This partnership builds on Canva’s previous integrations with Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot. Unlike earlier attempts, it closes the gap between fun, customizable creativity and advanced AI collaboration.

If you’ve ever tried to create multiple images with AI image generators for slide decks, marketing flyers, or social posts, my main frustration will feel all too familiar to you. Images are flat, lacking in layers. It can look as good as anything, but if it’s not quite right, you have no choice but to re-prompt, risking getting something completely different. My record for generating an image for a slide deck I was working on was 150, and none of them were quite right.

Here’s where today’s launch makes a difference. By pairing Google’s Nano Banana image model with Canva’s Magic Layers technology, you can now analyze an AI-generated image and split it into editable layers. This lets you tweak text, separate elements, and maintain layout—refining images without starting over.

For small businesses and content creators, the update adds one more amazing feature: Canva Brand Kits are now native to Gemini.

When you pull a Gemini-generated design into Canva, it doesn’t just remain editable – it automatically aligns with your pre-saved brand fonts, logos, and color palettes. Gone are the hours of trying to force an AI-generated image to look cohesive with your visual identity!

The Canva Connected App for Google Gemini begins rolling out today, May 19, 2026, with limited English availability across all Canva plans and Gemini tiers. Full availability is coming soon, though we currently have no more concrete details. Want to try it for yourself?
