It’s only been about three years since Jack Ryan ended its television run on Prime Video. However, the former CIA analyst returns to the streaming service in the brand-new movie, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War. The movie premieres on Prime Video on Wednesday, May 20, at 3 a.m. ET in the U.S.

Before Jack Reacher started taking names and kicking butt, Prime Video’s signature action hero was Jack Ryan, played by John Krasinski. Jack begins the series as a CIA financial analyst who prefers to work behind a desk and solve problems remotely. As the series progresses, Jack, a former marine, leaves the office to work in the field and conduct dangerous missions.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War is a movie, not a television show

John Krasinski is a co-writer on the script

Jack Ryan ran for four seasons on Prime Video from 2018 through 2023. Instead of a fifth season of the hit TV show, Amazon announced a movie in 2024 to serve as a continuation of the series.

Krasinski is not the only familiar face returning for Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Wendell Pierce reprises his role as James Greer, Jack’s mentor and former CIA boss, while Michael Kelly returns as Mike November, a private security contractor and Jack’s ally. Betty Gabriel also appears as CIA director Elizabeth Wright.

The standout addition to the film’s cast is Sienna Miller, who plays the mysterious MI6 officer Emma Marlow. Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, and JJ Feild round out the ensemble.

The explosive trailer for Jack Ryan: Ghost War features a reluctant Jack getting pulled back into the world of espionage. His mission is to discover why an unsanctioned black-ops unit has wreaked havoc on the world. According to Amazon’s logline, “Facing a past they thought was long put to rest, this is the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them have ever faced.”

Andrew Bernstein directs Jack Ryan: Ghost War from a screenplay by Krasinski and Aaron Rabin, based on a story by Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim.

Will Ghost War be the start of Prime Video’s Jack Ryan cinematic universe? Prime Video has four seasons of a beloved television show, and it now adds a movie to the mix. Amazon has not announced plans for a fifth season or second movie at this time. Like most decisions, the studio will likely wait to gauge the reception and viewership of Ghost War before greenlighting any more Jack Ryan adventures.

Still, it’s difficult to imagine that Ghost War will be the last entry in Prime Video’s Jack Ryan franchise. It’s too popular a property to sit idle in Amazon’s vault.
