Uncharted series developer Naughty Dog is reportedly early in development on a new game in the action-adventure series. That’s according to a report from MP1st, which said the game is bringing back series protagonist Nathan Drake in some form, suggesting he may not be the game’s lead.
The next Uncharted is also said to be a fresh entry and not a remake of any of the existing games. The project is reportedly being directed by Shaun Escayag, a studio veteran who also directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Noted insider NateTheHate corroborated the report, saying on Resetera that Escayag is indeed working on a new Uncharted game.
Escayag had left Naughty Dog to become creative director of Marvel’s Avengers at Crystal Dynamics, but later returned to the studio to work on an unnamed project, which now appears to be this Uncharted game.
The following paragraph includes spoilers for Uncharted 4’s ending.
Assuming the game is a continuation of the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End story, one possible way it may go is for Drake and Elena Fisher’s daughter, Cassie, who’s introduced at the end of the game, to lead this next adventure.
End of Uncharted 4 spoilers.
Naughty Dog will reportedly shift to developing the mysterious game after shipping Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the studio’s current main project, which does not yet have a release target. Naughty Dog recently said Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be properly revealed in 2027, suggesting it may be released that same year. Given that timeline, we’re not likely to see the Uncharted game for quite some time yet.
Beyond a re-release in 2022, the last Uncharted game was 2017’s The Lost Legacy, itself an Uncharted 4 spin-off starring some of the same characters.
