Nintendo confirms ‘The Legend of Zelda’ movie’s title

Eager fans were hoping that, on Tuesday morning, Nintendo would finally share a meaningful update on The Legend of Zelda movie releasing in April 2027. Maybe the Nintendo Direct would show a trailer, or offer more stills of the unannounced cast members. Well, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto did give us some info on the movie — though it’s not exactly what people wanted.

The Zelda movie is going to be called … The Legend of Zelda. Shocker, I know. Miyamoto said that fans would understand why the movie doesn’t have a subtitle, which makes it sound like this will be an origin story. Since the title reveal happened directly after an emotional orchestral opening, the news was as anticlimactic as it was hilarious. Miyamoto said Nintendo would share more information in the future.

Previously, Nintendo had only released stills of its upcoming fantasy video game adaptation starring Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Since then, Hollywood trades have revealed the casting of Australian actor Uli Latukefu (Marco Polo) as Ganondorf, Dichen Lachman (Severance) as Impa, and Yvonne Strahovski (Mass Effect 2) as an unknown character. Sam Neill of Jurassic Park fame was also rumored to be in the movie as the King of Hyrule, and the appearance may well be the late actor’s final silver screen performance. Beyond the stacked cast, the movie is being produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto in partnership with Sony veteran Avi Arad.

The movie wrapped filming in April 2026, and since then, there’s been a bit of an information blackout. The only real nugget of information we’ve received since the movie’s announcement is an interview with director Wes Ball, who has noted that the movie will have a more “grounded” and “real” vibe. With the new trailer, the public can see exactly what Ball meant — and decide how well the movie captures the spirit of the venerated RPG series.

Though the film is exciting, fans of the series would do well to check out the full Nintendo Direct. The 30-minute showcase was brimming with Zelda news, including the first-ever look at the Ocarina of Time remake’s gameplay and the fancy (and more expensive) new Nintendo Switch 2 console that will release alongside the title.
