Overwatch Seasonal Hero Releases ‘The Right Thing for the Game,’ Blizzard Says

2026 has been a big year for Overwatch. In addition to a yearlong power-struggle narrative arc running throughout the revitalized hero shooter, Blizzard Entertainment will make good on plans to release a whopping 10 heroes for Overwatch this year. That’s a massive difference from the game’s previous cadence, which averaged around three heroes per year. And while the 10th anniversary for Overwatch was something of an anomaly, Blizzard says it plans to stick with seasonal hero releases.

Speaking to Blizzard’s Walter Kong, formerly GM of Overwatch and now senior VP of live game development, and Alec Dawson, associate game director for Overwatch, the two leads tell Polygon that seasonal hero releases “are the right thing for the game.”

At BlizzCon 2026, the Overwatch team unveiled the new vampire-inspired support hero Doctrine and teased the 10th hero — a new, still-mysterious Omnic detective archetype — coming to the hero shooter, while also hinting at big things to come in 2027. Blizzard plans to hold another Spotlight showcase in February, where it will reveal what’s next for Overwatch. Kong said that the 2026 Overwatch Spotlight was an unexpected success for Blizzard, and that the team has learned a great deal since then.

“The results were beyond our expectations in terms of the energy that it created and in terms of the impact of putting Overwatch back into the topic of conversation for gamers,” Kong said. “And I think it made everyone [on the team] have a sigh of relief that our hypothesis was born out by this enthusiasm.

“As the year has been progressing, and we have been able to roll out heroes and integrate them with the year-long story arc, it has created this rhythm for us that feels comfortable and it feels right. I can’t say that we can do the same thing again in February next year, but I can say that we feel like seasonal hero release is the right thing for the game. We learned a lot in the seasons since the beginning of the year, and it’s all going into an evolving playbook, and that is informing what we will bring to 2027.”

In February, when Blizzard released five new Overwatch heroes at once and dropped the 2 from the so-called sequel’s title, player response was immediate. Based solely on the game’s Steam data, Overwatch concurrent player counts more than doubled as part of Blizzard’s sweeping changes. It was a clear indicator of what many players wanted: more heroes. If Blizzard sticks to its seasonal plan going forward, that will mean five or six new heroes each year. The team seems willing to meet those challenges in its current form.

“When you’re working on a game like Overwatch, a live-service game, there are constant challenges,” said Dawson. “It’s about really looking at what players are clamoring for, being able to be flexible enough to meet all of those needs, but also continue to surprise them too.

“We’ve established this year that we’re going to be coming back to narrative in Overwatch and tell great stories every year. We’re going to release heroes every season. Now we have to think about what’s next, what’s beyond that as well. And making sure that Overwatch can just remain the most polished competitive shooter that we want it to be.”

By the end of 2026, Overwatch will boast a playable roster of 55 heroes. By next year, that will push to 60, if the seasonal hero release cadence remains the same. That’s up from 21 at launch. Despite that growth, Dawson says the Overwatch roster is not lacking in ideas for heroes that bring new personalities, mechanics, and representation to the game. When I asked Dawson if Overwatch was approaching a roster that may feel too overwhelming, he said no.

“I don’t know if we’re at that limit yet,” Dawson said. “I don’t know. Maybe ask us when we’re at 100 or something!”

Overwatch‘s next season will launch on Oct. 6 and will bring new hero Doctrine to the game.
