Sekiro Anime Gets Official Streaming Date and Surprise Format Change

The anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice finally has a streaming release date. Crunchyroll announced Thursday that Sekiro: No Defeat will begin streaming on the anime platform in January 2027, but it will arrive on streaming in a substantially different form: as an eight-episode series, not a film.

News of Sekiro: No Defeat‘s streaming release comes as the anime wraps up its original theatrical run in Japan, where it received an extended run. The theatrically released version of the Sekiro anime was presented as a 107-minute film, but when No Defeat comes to streaming, it will offer an extended version of the adaptation.

Sekiro: No Defeat producer Tetsushi Suzuki announced the change on the anime’s official website — and actually apologized for not disclosing the episodic nature of the adaptation.

“This project started as an eight-episode TV series. However, as production progressed, we felt a strong desire to have people experience the film’s overwhelming visuals and sound on the big screen first, so we released an edited version of the film as a preview,” Suzuki said in machine-translated comments. “We apologize for not informing you that the film currently showing is an edited version and for not having informed you about the TV series. The TV series, which includes scenes and cuts not included in the film, will be released weekly, offering a different experience and appeal while still being based on the story depicted in the film. Whether you have already seen the film or are experiencing the series for the first time through the TV series, we hope you will look forward to it.”

Kenichi Kutsuna directed Sekiro: No Defeat for anime studio Qzil.la alongside Shunsuke Fukui as assistant director, Takahiro Kishida as character designer, and Shuta Hasunuma as composer.
