Of all the games I thought I’d see converted to virtual reality, the Diablo games weren’t among them, for some reason. But one industrious modder has set about changing that, converting probably the most well-liked Diablo game, Diablo 2.

Footage of the Diablo 2 VR mod was shared on Reddit and it shows the game being played in first-person, as the Sorceress explores the dingy starting area fields of the game, fireballing zombies and other enemies that are shambling nearby. It seems to work pretty well, with the player’s left forearm showing the character’s health and mana pools, and toolbar, and the inventory on their belt and map in their hand.

The Diablo 2 VR mod is made by Sergious – Reddit username Fantastic-Author2736 – and the mod files are made available on Github, should you wish to try it. Sergious made the mod with FlatVR and BodyWalk, but you don’t need BodyWalk, apparently, to play it.

It’s strikingly atmospheric seeing Diablo’s world this way, through the character’s eyes. The world is usually so far below you, as you look over it like a god from above, from an isometric vantage point. Not for the first time, it’s made me wonder what Diablo would be like played from a much closer, over-the-shoulder camera angle, or even a first-person one. I’d half-expected Diablo 5 – recently announced at BlizzCon – to go this way, though it doesn’t appear to be.

Meanwhile, in VR land, Valve recently released its much-awaited new Steam Frame headset, which we’ve reviewed on Eurogamer and we really liked. The drawback, as ever, is cost, with the base version priced £889. But if you can afford it, it offers an impressive and comfortable wireless VR experience, and a way to play non-VR games through a kind of hybrid experience. Perhaps you can play the other Diablo games this way, while Sergious finishes their Diablo 2 VR mod. Chop chop!
