The results provide growers with local evidence that controlled moisture stress can improve seed production while reducing irrigation costs. They also show that variety choice remains important, with several varieties performing consistently well across different irrigation strategies and seasons.
Testing varieties under commercial conditions
Established at Warrawee Park near Keith in June 2018, the trial compared 31 proprietary and benchmark alfalfa varieties over five seed harvests, reflecting the productive life of a commercial stand.
Each variety was grown under three flood irrigation strategies. Standard irrigation followed current practice. Under moderate stress, irrigation was delayed until plants began to wilt. Under high stress, watering was delayed until plants showed early signs of leaf drop. Soil moisture and weather data supported irrigation scheduling.
Researchers measured annual seed yield and spring hay production. A separate herbage trial assessed dry matter production. Gross margins were calculated using seed and hay income, variable costs and irrigation costs.
Delayed irrigation increased seed yield
After the establishment year, the high-stress strategy generally produced higher seed yields than standard irrigation. The exception was 2021–22, when seasonal rainfall disrupted the planned irrigation treatments and differences were not significant.
The high-stress treatment produced average yields of approximately 0.6 to 0.7 metric tons per hectare across the trial period. Responses under moderate stress were less consistent, showing that a small delay in irrigation did not reliably improve performance compared with standard practice.
Importantly, the high-stress strategy was carefully managed. It involved waiting until plants showed early leaf drop before watering, rather than allowing severe or prolonged stress.
Variety choice also matters
Some varieties consistently outperformed others. SW18NPK91, SARDI 10 Series II, Heritage 10 and SARDI 7 Series II were among the highest yielding across irrigation treatments and seasons. This indicates that irrigation management and variety selection should be considered together.
The strongest-performing varieties maintained comparatively high seed yields under different levels of moisture stress, although seasonal conditions continued to influence results. Growers should also consider local adaptation, dormancy, persistence, disease resistance, hay production and seed availability when selecting a variety.
Higher returns from the high-stress strategy
The high-stress treatment delivered the highest gross margin in each of the four years analyzed. Gross margins ranged from approximately $3,064 to $4,210 per hectare, compared with $2,071 to $3,074 per hectare under standard irrigation.
The advantage came from a combination of higher seed yields and lower irrigation costs, with high seed prices further increasing returns in the final year. These figures are comparative gross margins rather than complete costs of production, so growers should apply their own water, labor, input and seed price assumptions.
What growers can apply now
The trial provides strong evidence that alfalfa seed crops do not need to be watered according to a fixed calendar or at the first sign of moisture stress. Allowing the crop to reach a controlled level of stress before irrigating may improve seed yield, reduce water use and increase gross margin.
The Keith trial was conducted on sandy loam soil under flood irrigation. Growers will need to determine the timing and degree of safe irrigation delay based on their soil type, irrigation system, crop condition, weather and water-holding capacity. If considering this approach, test it on a small area or individual irrigation bay while closely monitoring plant condition and soil moisture. Recording water use, seed yield, hay income and gross margin will help determine whether the strategy works under individual farm conditions.
The aim is not simply to use less water. It is to apply water when it delivers the greatest value for seed production.
