After a failed attempt, Amazon MGM Studios is once again developing a Stargate series. According to Variety, the company is bringing on Jac Schaeffer, the showrunner of one of Disney Plus’s most successful shows, WandaVision.
Jac Schaeffer takes on Stargate project
Amazon has wanted to create a Stargate TV series for a while now. Martin Gero, creator of Blindspot, had worked on various Stargate television series early in his career, so bringing him on board for a new series felt like the right move in 2025. Unfortunately, the project was canceled early in development.
According to Variety, Amazon was “concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal.” Despite these setbacks, Amazon wasn’t ready to give up and was still on the prowl for a writer, and it seems it might’ve just found her.
Earlier this year, the company made a three-year deal with Jac Schaeffer. It is now taking advantage of the deal by handing her the Stargate project. You likely know Schaeffer best for her work as the creator of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, two critically acclaimed shows that reached the top of the charts on Disney Plus. Clearly, Amazon is hoping she can replicate that success with a Stargate show.
Very little is known about this project or how it differs from what Gero’s take would’ve been. Regardless, Schaeffer will surely put her spin on the project and make it the best she possibly can for today’s viewership.
Taking on this project is a huge responsibility. There is a special place for Stargate in the hearts of veteran science fiction fans. Additionally, it may capture the attention of a younger audience who haven’t been as exposed to it compared to rival sci-fi franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek. There’s no release window for this new Stargate show at this time.
