Netflix new releases: 7 movies and shows you need to stream this week (May 11-17)
Netflix is adding just 16 new movies and shows to the streaming service this week, but there are a few new titles that are worth adding to your watchlist. Top of the list for me is “Nemesis,” a brand-new crime drama centered around a police detective (Matthew Law) and a criminal mastermind (Y’lan Noel). If you liked the show “Power,” it’s a must-watch.
But it’s not the only one. “Marty, Life Is Short” is a brand new documentary about “Only Murders in the Building” star and comedy icon, Martin Short. It’s directed by “The Empire Strikes Back” co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, so you can expect good things. Just don’t expect lightsaber battles in this one.

‘Nemesis’
Genre: Crime drama series
What it’s about: Coltrane Wilder (Y’lan Noel) is a criminal mastermind, but to most people, he’s reformed and a respectable businessman. But Det. Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law) is convinced that not only is Wilder still pulling heists, but that he’s the one who killed Stiles’s partner. Now, Stiles won’t stop at anything to bring Wilder down.
Why you should watch it: If you liked “Power” on Starz, then this show is a must-watch. It’s from “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp and brings back some other alumni from the show, including Domenick Lombardozzi, who you might know better from “The Wire” and “Tulsa King.”

‘Marty, Life Is Short’
Genre: Documentary movie
What it’s about: Martin Short is a comedy icon. Between “Saturday Night Live” and “Only Murders in the Building,” his resume is unimpeachable. But in “Marty, Life Is Short,” director Lawrence Kasdan attempts to reveal the man behind the comedian, and his relationship with his late wife of 36 years, Nancy Dolman, who passed away in 2010.
Why you should watch it: Based on the trailer, this looks to be a more insightful documentary than “Lorne,” which also examined a relatively private comedy star. That’s in no small part due to its use of extensive home videos filmed by Short himself. That said, there’s also plenty of celebrity appearances, including the late Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Steve Martin, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and John Mulaney.

‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’
Genre: Game show series
What it’s about: “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” is exactly what it sounds like. The same “Jeopardy” you know and love, but with questions about pop culture instead of more elevated trivia.
Why you should watch it: Hosted by “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost, this show is sure to be funny. Not funny enough for Prime Video, which abandoned the show after one season, but seemingly funny enough for Netflix to give it a second chance.

‘Devil May Cry’ season 2
Genre: Animated fantasy action series
What it’s about: In season 1, demon hunter (and half demon) Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch) had to deal with being hunted by Dark Realm Command (DARKCOM) while hunting down the White Rabbit (Hoon Lee). This season, though, a new player has entered the fight against Dante: his own brother, Vergil (Robbie Daymond). And he’s just as powerful as our protagonist.
Why you should watch it: “Devil May Cry” is an iconic video game franchise, especially for millennials like myself. The 2001 debut game will always remain a seminal work in the history of video games and “Castlevania” creator Adi Shankar and the legendary Studio Mir did a great job bringing it to life in season 1. I expect them to do a great job again with season 2.

‘Untold UK: Jamie Vardy’
Genre: Documentary movie
What it’s about: Jamie Vardy was a relative unknown until 2012, when the part-time footballer signed with Leicester City. He then rose to the pinnacle of the sport, winning the Premier League with Leicester in 2015-2016 and securing the Premier League Golden Boot in 2019-2020. But he’s always kept that underdog mentality, even after becoming one of the best strikers in Premier League history.
Why you should watch it: Vardy’s story is an interesting one to examine. It really is shocking that a player who didn’t make it to the Premier League until 27, spending the first six years of his senior career in semi-professional football, ultimately became a face of the league and even an England international player. Worth a watch for those who like sports documentaries.

‘Perfect Match’ season 4
Genre: Reality dating series
What it’s about: “Perfect Match” puts the top singles from the Netflix Reality Universe into a dating show, with “Love Is Blind” host Nick Lachey in charge. But it’s not just seasoned Netflix reality competing. Stars from “Love Island,” “Vanderpump Rules,” and more are competing to find the perfect match.
Why you should watch it: Netflix knows how to pump out reality shows after reality shows filled with attractive singles. “Perfect Match” pits them all together in a single arena, which might just be the perfect recipe for those who love a dating show.

Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano
Genre: Live sports event
What it’s about: MMA legend Ronda Rousey returns to the octagon to take on MMA pioneer Gina Carano. Plus, undercard bouts featuring Nate Diaz and Francis Ngannou.
Why you should watch it: Rousey (12-2, 9 submissions, 3 KOs) was the best women’s MMA fighter in the world at one point. But this will be her first fight in nearly a decade, and it’s unclear if she’s still got what it takes. Carano (7-1, 1 submission, 3 KOs) is no slouch, and there’s no reason she can’t win this exhibition bout.

Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano (Netflix live event)
Ronda Rousey (12-2, 9 submissions, 3 KOs) is back to shake up the world of combat sports with her first fight in nearly a decade against fellow women’s MMA pioneer Gina Carano (7-1, 1 submission, 3 KOs). Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix have also added a new clash of fan-favorite fighters to the blockbuster MMA card: Nate Diaz (22-13, 14 submissions, 4 KOs) will face Mike “Platinum” Perry (14-8, 11 KOs) in a five-round welterweight bout and heavyweight superstar Francis Ngannou (18–3, 4 submissions, 13 KOs) will face Brazil’s Philipe Lins (18–5, 4 submissions, 9 KOs). The historic fight night will take place on May 16 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, CA, marking Netflix’s first-ever live MMA broadcast and MVP’s inaugural MMA event.
