AI is Quietly Taking Over Local SEO! No One’s Ready for This

Local SEO is facing a massive shift. A new feature, the AI Local Pack, is quietly replacing the traditional 3-pack and cutting business visibility in some cases by more than half.

We partnered with Jepto to analyze call data from 179 Google Business Profiles, and the results were startling: even businesses holding top positions are seeing a year-over-year drop in calls.

According to data from Places Scout, AI Local Packs are already appearing on roughly 8% of keywords (and rising). Here’s why they are “havoc” for your lead flow:

  • Fewer Spots: They often show only 1 or 2 businesses instead of the usual 3.
  • No Call Buttons: Many versions of the AI Local pack remove the “click-to-call” button entirely.  This is particularly impactful for mobile searches and results
  • Shrunken Visibility: AI packs surface 32% fewer unique businesses than traditional packs.
  • Rank Blindness: Most tracking software can’t see AI Local Packs yet, so you look “fine” on paper while your traffic vanishes.

How to Survive (and Thrive) with AI Local Packs

The “set it and forget it” era of Google Business Profiles is over. To keep the phones ringing, you need to pivot:

  1. Expand Your Footprint: Relying on a single high-ranking location is a high-risk strategy. Multiple locations increase your “lottery tickets” for an AI-narrowed search.
  2. The Pay-to-Play Pivot: We are seeing significantly higher ROI on Google Ads because ads still retain the call buttons and placement that organic listings are losing.
  3. Diversify Ad Formats: Use both Search Ads and Local Services Ads (LSAs) to ensure you dominate the top of the fold.

The bottom line: AI Local Packs are already here. The businesses that adapt to this new reality with aggressive diversification will thrive; the rest will wonder why the phone stopped ringing.
