Missed Saturday Night Live? Catch Matt Damon’s SNL return — plus, the Tucker Carlson sketch that broke the internet
All rise! Court is back in session for Matt Damon’s Brett Kavanaugh. Saturday Night Live returned for its penultimate episode of its 51st season last night, May 9, with the “Bourne” and “Odyssey” star hosting for the third time.
One of the most viral skits from last night’s episode is the cold open, where Damon revived his iconic impression of the Supreme Court justice alongside Colin Jost as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Aziz Ansari as FBI Director Kash Patel. Damon famously spoofed Kavanaugh on “SNL” back in 2018 when the show parodied the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
The three Trump appointees gather for a drink in a quiet Washington D.C. bar to celebrate their accomplishments — ending abortion, starting a war, and selling personalized, self-branded bourbon, respectively. Kavanaugh then lets the others in on a secret: that the Supreme Court will let President Donald Trump run for a third term, explaining that Trump “found the original Constitution, and at the end, he wrote, ‘Psych!'”
Damon also gave a nod to mothers everywhere this Mother’s Day weekend in his opening monologue, where he came in clutch for viewers who forgot to grab a gift for their mom this year.
He delivered a “personalized message” to the camera flattering moms everywhere as a gift before plugging the perfect date idea: going with their partner to see “The Odyssey” in nine weeks time.
Despite the killer opening, the skits themselves felt a bit uninspired. One of Damon as an overzealous substitute school teacher desperately trying to get his class to dance was painful to watch. So was one where Damon and the rest of the cast take turns spit-taking on Mikey Day with increasingly more viscous liquids.
Marcello Hernández stole the show, as always, in another where he, Damon, and long-time cast member Kenan Thompson discuss how everyone thinks they’re a tough guy these days only to reveal they all get their asses beat on the regular. One of Hernández’ stories takes a turn for the bizarre that cracked me up. It’s so good I don’t want to spoil it.
Also worth shouting out is Jeremy Culhane’s return as Tucker Carlson on this week’s Weekend Update. The Dropout regular’s impression went viral last month, racking up over 2 million views on YouTube, and Culhane got a loud cheer from the audience as he joined Jost again on set.
The former Fox News host waged war against the Meta Gala and all its “clown outfits,” floated a conspiracy theory about the silent (or silenced??) “E” in one of the names of the 50 states, and delivered a pitch-perfect laugh in character.
