Reading in your twenties as a young woman is familiar: you loved it as a kid, burned out after high school, and now books are big again. Most of us were former readers trying to rekindle our love of reading.
If you’re like me and experiencing the same thing, I have a list of great books on Kindle Unlimited that got me back into reading. Now I read daily, but it all began with these books — some older, some newer. A few you may recognize from another list, while others are new to you. Either way, you’ll be hooked for hours.
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
A classic mystery
Whenever I recommend anything related to a Kindle Unlimited subscription, I instantly point out The Housemaid. Honestly, I’m a big fan of Freida McFadden’s work, but it was the first book that got me into all of it.
The Housemaid’s essential premise is that it follows a young woman desperate for a job who is hired as a housemaid for a wealthy family living on Long Island. But as she begins to work there, secrets unravel and twists occur unlike anything else.
I think McFadden puts a spell or something on her books because every time I crack one open, I finish it within a day—even though I’m usually a slow reader. This is the book to get you back into reading, especially if you like history. With a 2025 feature film adaptation and a sequel on the way, now is the perfect time to read it.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
You’ll be on the edge of your seat
I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Colleen Hoover’s works — a lot of her love stories just don’t really do it for me. However, if you want her style of writing with a twist in genre, I’d highly suggest checking out Verity.

Time to dive into a (virtual) book
Verity’s premise follows a young writer who is struggling to make ends meet, but when she is hired to complete a bestselling series for an injured writer, she discovers gruesome secrets that change everything, all pointing back to the writer she’s trying to finish the series for.
There’s a feature film adaptation of Verity releasing later in 2026, and the book itself is a fairly quick read. I would fully recommend reading it.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Dragons and romance – the perfect combination
I mentioned Fourth Wing in my article about famous books on Kindle Unlimited, and I will discuss it now because it’s a big deal.
The book tells the story of a young woman, Violet Sorrengail, who is forced to become a dragon rider at a military academy despite having trained her entire life to be a scribe (basically, the people who write history). While trying to survive the grueling challenges and quests, she starts to discover secrets about her home, her family, and more — all while trying not to get killed by her wingleader, Xaden Riorson.

I will say straight up that Fourth Wing is a “love it or hate it” kind of book, but if you love it, you really love it, so I knew I had to at least suggest it. This book did get me back into reading, and it, along with its two sequels (so far), is available on KU.
Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry
A monster of a book — literally
Back in 2025, I had a reading slump, but two books helped. The first was Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry.
The basic premise of Shield of Sparrows is that a princess, often overlooked and unappreciated, is forced into an arranged marriage for the sake of keeping her home safe as monsters infest it. As she travels, she discovers secrets that change the game and could put her family in danger.
Devney Perry has written many romance novels, but Shield of Sparrows was the first I read and got me out of my fantasy slump. The plot and love story are well-paced, and the cliffhanger leaves you wanting more.
Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez
Heartwarming and bitterly sweet in the best way
Lastly, another book in 2025 that brought me out of my reading slump was Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez. The story follows a young woman leaving home to care for her mother with early-onset dementia, right after her best date in California.
This was the first Abby Jimenez book I read, and let me tell you, I did not expect the gutpunch that it gave me. I was sobbing for ages while reading this book, which, I must admit, is very hard to do these days. It’s a quick read, emotional, and has an impactful love story that anyone can connect with.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many amazing books on Kindle Unlimited, but these helped me embrace my love of reading again — and thanks to BookTok, my Kindle and I are besties now.
