It’s very rare nowadays that I find a mattress, no matter the size, for under $100. However, Mattress Firm has cut the price of one of its bestselling models to under $90 for Memorial Day. This means the Sleepy’s Basic Innerspring Firm Mattress, now reduced to $89.99 (was $219.99) at Mattress Firm, is at its cheapest price ever. However, this deal is valid in-store only while stocks last.

This sale occurs alongside Mattress Firm’s broader Memorial Day Sale and its Big Holiday Flash Sale, where you can save an extra 20% on selected mattresses. These are all great deals from the retailer that stock some of the best mattresses in America. However, there are three caveats that you should be aware of before buying the Basic Innerspring Firm Mattress.

First of all, its design. While featuring foams and springs for a balance of firm support and comfort, is only 8.25″ tall. Meanwhile, we recommend a bed of at least 10″ for a supportive build. There’s also the matter of limited stock and the fact that it’s sold in-store only. So, I’ve rounded up three alternative cheap mattress deals, all tested by us and available to buy online, in this month’s Memorial Day mattress sales.

What to look for in a cheap mattress

We classify a “cheap” or “budget” mattress as any bed that’s regularly under $400 for a queen. When looking for a cheap mattress, it’s important to invest as much as your budget allows and to look for three essential features. The absence of any of these features should be a deal breaker.

Most mattresses are made of foam these days, but any mattress containing foam that isn’t CertiPUR-US certified is best avoided. Even the cheapest mattresses on the market should have this bare-minimum certification as it guarantees that the foam to ensure it adheres to environmental and health safety standards.

Next, look at the height of the mattress. While 8″ is okay for short-term use, such as a guest room bed, a regularly-used mattress needs to be at least 10″ tall to support most adult sleepers.

And finally, research the returns policy and sleep trial. Most of the best mattresses in a box come with a trial that allows you to test out your mattress for certain number of nights before deciding you want to return for a full refund. You really need at least 30 nights to decide whether a mattress is a good fit for you, and ideally you should look for a trial of 90 nights of more.

When buying from third party retailers such as Amazon or Walmart, mattress trial and return policies can be quite vague, so contact customer services to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.
